Conditional Mutant At Biology Glossary
What is it? A mutant that can grow under one set (permissive) of environmental conditions but cannot grow under different (restrictive or nonpermissive) conditions. Some conditional mutants survive under the nonpermissive conditions but others (conditional lethal mutants) die under the nonpermissive conditions.Bio Definition Added By: Christian

Bio Term group 1 intron is Self-splicing intron that requires an external guanine-containing nucleotide for splicing; releases the intron in a linear form.Bio Term episome is A genetic element in bacteria that can replicate free in the cytoplasm or can be inserted into the main bacterial chromosome and replicate with the chromosome. Term used by Jacob and Wollman for genetic elements that can either exist independently in a cell or become integrated into the host chromosome.
Bio Term Ethidium bromide is A fluorescent chemical that intercalates between base pairs in a doublestranded DNA molecule. Commonly used to detect DNA following gel electrophoresis. Ethidium bromide intercalates between the stacked bases of DNA and RNA. When excited by UV light between 254 nm (short wave) and 366 nm (long wave) it emits fluorescent light at 590 nm. Due to the decreased rotation possible when it is intercalated, the DNA-ethidium bromide complex produces about 50 times more fluorescence than free ethidium bromide. When ethidium bromide stained gels are photographed on a UV transilluminator a UV filter is required to screen out the background UV from the transilluminator. Ethidium bromide is a known carcinogen.
Bio Term site-specific recombination is A crossover event, such as the integration of phage lambda, that requires homology of only a very short region and uses an enzyme specific for that recombination. Recombination occurring between two specific sequences that need not be homologous; mediated by a specific recombination system.
Bio Term striate is in plant structures, marked with parallel ridges or depressions.
