Primer At Biology Glossary

What is it? A short oligonucleotide complementary to a strand of DNA or RNA that is used to initiate synthesis of the complementary DNA strand. The primer provides a 3OH end which is required by DNA polymerases to initiate synthesis of the complementary DNA.
