Antigenic Drift At Biology Glossary

What is it? The accumulation of mutations that modify a molecule on the cell surface of a pathogen and thereby alters recognition by the host immune system. These changes prevent preexisting antibodies from recognizing the invading pathogen. This process is most often used to describe viruses. (See Antigenic variation below)
