Agarose At Biology Glossary

What is it? An uncharged polysaccharide purified from agar. Agarose melts when heated to 100 C and resolidifies when cooled below about 50C. When it solidifies agarose forms a matrix. The size of the pores in the gel matrix can be varied by using different concentrations of agarose: the higher the concentration of agarose, the smaller the pore size.
