Heterokaryon Test At Biology Glossary

What is it? A test for cytoplasmic organelle mutations (eg. mitochondrial or chloroplast mutations), based on new associations (recombination) of phenotypes in cells derived from genetically marked haploid heterokaryons. Since the heterokaryons are haploid and produce haploid spores by a process that does not involve diploid nuclei normal genetic recombination does not occur. Therefore evidence of recombination is evidence of reassociation by some other means such as reassociation of an organelle with nucleus.
